As organisations adopt information technology systems to aid them in their functioning, the cost of failure increases. It is the assertion of this paper that traditional (hard systems) methodologies are failing to adequately help organisations with their adoption of IT. System developers need to understand the cultural and value systems upon which an organisation functions if information technology systems are to be developed which meet organisational needs. Consequently a more sociologically aware methodology and notation is required.
