The Divine Intervention (1989)

Words by Brian Randell, to the tune of "Harvest Home [aka Bringing in the Sheaves]" (George A. Minor)

I learnt it first by e-mail,
I thought that seems insane;
The powers-that-be deciding,
To split the Lab in twain?

I checked with Lindsay Marshall,
In case my SUN was wrong.
He overhauled the system,
It didn't take him long.

He'd mended it by Tuesday.
All messages'd been checked.
I switched it on; the fault had gone!
It said we they'll protect.

Now down there in the Basement
The Service staff they nod,
They know defeating Crombie,
Was true an Act of God!

And Jim Eve on the Ninth Floor
He gives his thanks and praise.
Senate he said doth often work
In strange and wondrous ways.

Strange and wondrous ways,
Strange and wondrous ways.
Senate he said doth often work,
In strange and wondrous ways.

Strange and wondrous ways,
Strange and wondrous ways.
Senate he said doth often work,
In strange and wondrous ways.

It all began when Crombie
's Committee of straw men,
Ignored advice from Hartley
On facts beyond their ken.

Their report it came to Senate,
The good guys rallied round.
They got the issue de-ferred
Our arguments seemed sound.

Strange and wondrous ways,
Strange and wondrous ways.
Senate he said doth often work,
In strange and wondrous ways.

Strange and wondrous ways,
Strange and wondrous ways.
Senate he said doth often work,
In strange and wondrous ways.

So PRC reviewed things,
We hoped with open mind,
But soon showed to our horror
T'was nothing of the kind!

Our campaign - it was frenzied,
The Deans it did amaze,
Just how we beat the system
In strange and wondrous ways.

Strange and wondrous ways,
Strange and wondrous ways.
Senate we said doth often work,
In strange and wondrous ways.

Strange and wondrous ways,
Strange and wondrous ways.
Senate we said doth often work,
In strange and wondrous ways.

Elizabeth at Senate
With Tom there at her side
Dealt roundly with objectors,
Whilst they the V.C. eyed.

And then the fateful voting
Left Crombie in a daze,
As members made their minds up
In strange and wondrous ways.

Strange and wondrous ways,
Strange and wondrous ways.
Senate we said doth often work,
In strange and wondrous ways.

Strange and wondrous ways,
Strange and wondrous ways.
Senate we said doth often work,
In strange and wondrous ways.

So spare a thought for Crombie,
And for his hopes and pride.
It wasn't really fair to him,
With God now on our side.

And so we face the future,
With strong determined gaze,
Intending to continue,
Our strange and wondrous ways.

Strange and wondrous ways,
Strange and wondrous ways.
The Lab we say does often work,
In strange and wondrous ways.

Strange and wondrous ways,
Strange and wondrous ways.
The Lab we say does often work,
In strange and wondrous ways.
